(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center management solutions provider Raritan (www.raritan.nl) announced on Wednesday that it has joined the Green IT Amsterdam Region (www.greenitamsterdam.nl) consortium.

With a focus on creating a “green collar economy,” the consortium consists of businesses in the ICT and energy sector, as well as regional authorities and knowledge institutes.

According to the press release, Amsterdam aims to reduce CO2 emission by 40 percent by 2025. Many data center operators are adopting green energy in Amsterdam data centers. Earlier this week, data center operator Level 3 upgraded its Amsterdam data center to renewable energy.

In August, the WHIR talked to EvoSwitch managing director Eric Boonstra, where he discussed the company’s own green initiatives, as well as the data center market in Amsterdam.

According to its website, participants of the Green IT Amsterdam Region consortium develop a program of specific projects, and identify business opportunities in Amsterdam.

“The growing need for energy to facilitate the increasing traffic and usage of data and software has become an important environmental and economic issue,” the website says.

“Energy usage of data centers in the Netherlands increased by over 50 percent in the past five years and available floor area of data centers have more than quadrupled,” Ton Sneekes, Raritan’s area manager Benelux said in a statement. “As a result the ability for organizations to monitor, measure and control energy consumption has become the norm for any reputable organization looking to design, build and maintain energy efficient data centers.”

Green IT Amsterdam says Raritan is a “unique and important” addition to the consortium.

According to a press release, Raritan’s  intelligent rack power distribution units, energy management software and environmental data center monitoring are all solutions to contribute to Amsterdam’s larger goal of reducing energy use.

“Raritan’s extensive R&D in power management and energy accounting tools makes them an invaluable partner to our network, strengthening its ability to understand and reduce the energy and carbon footprint of large data centers,” Jan Willen Tellegen, managing director Green IT Amsterdam said in a statement.

In June, Raritan added new tools to its Power IQ data center energy management software.
