(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Wholesale data center provider Vantage Data Centers (www.vantagedatacenters.com) announced on Monday that its V3 data center in Santa Clara, California has been given the LEED Platinum certification.

This announcement comes two months after data center firm CoreSite Realty received a LEED Gold certification at the first of its four planned Santa Clara campus data centers.

The green certification was established by the US Green Building Council and is the leading rating system for green design and construction of buildings, according to the press release. LEED is a point-based system: there are 100 base points, six possible innovation in design and four regional priority points. LEED has four tiers: certified, silver, gold and platinum is the highest possible certification.

The 60,000 square foot data center received the highest LEED level of certification, Vantage says. According to the press release, “the project incorporated responsible site development practices, water-saving strategies, energy-saving design measures, efficient material selection and low-toxic building materials.”

The company says its campus also contains two other buildings that are LEED registered. When all certifications are successful, the Vantage site in Santa Clara would become the largest LEED Platinum data center campus in the US, according to the press release. The site has more than 300,000 square feet of space supported by a 50 MW dedicated substation, Vantage says.

“Data center energy efficiency has become a significant business issue for enterprises and is a key driver in lowering total cost of ownership,” Jim Trout, CEO of Vantage Data Centers said in a statement. “Vantage is setting a new efficiency standard for the wholesale data center industry.”

Vantage says its V3 data center has a PUE of 1.29 which translates into about $3 million per year in saved operating expense.

By diverting 91 percent of the construction waste, and using more than 40 percent recycled content in the construction, Vantage was awarded the certification. The rating was also awarded because of the building’s energy efficiency, lighting controls and HVAC.

Vantage addressed regional environmental concerns by reducing the demand on the local water supply for irrigation with a water-efficient landscape design. According to the press release, the parking lot features preferred parking for carpools and hybrid cars as well.

The data center firm says it will continue its commitment to sustainable design and greenhouse gas emissions reduction in all of its future projects.

Recently, web hosting provider pair Networks broke ground on its Las Vegas data center, set to be the first LEED Platinum certified data center in Nevada.
