(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center provider Colocation America (www.colocationamerica.com) announced on Tuesday that it has donated a dedicated server to Mepis.org (www.mepis.org) for its SimplyMEPIS ftp site.

According to the press release, SimplyMEPIS is a ready-to-use desktop operating system based on Debian Linux.

Colocation America says it donated a dedicated server to promote Linux operating systems and open source platforms.

Mepis.org says that the ftp service will enable them to improve support to the users of MEPIS Linux.

“We are using the server donated by Colocation America as the master ftp server for distributing the SimplyMEPIS and AntiX-MEPIS release ISO files and the SimplyMEPIS software package pool. We appreciate Colocation America generously offering us the use of one of their dedicated servers,” Warren Woodford, lead developer of SimplyMEPIS said in a statement.

Linux celebrated its 20th anniversary in April.

Open source projects have seen tremendous growth and support recently especially since Citrix announced its acquisition of open source cloud developer Cloud.com. OpenStack software developer Piston Cloud Computing raised $4.5 million in funding and Drupal-based software developer Acquia closed a $15 million funding round last week.

Earlier this year Colocation America donated $100 to TreePeople for every new colocation sign-up in its Los Angeles data centers for Earth Day.
