(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — At the opening session of cPanel Conference 2010, John Lyle Koston explained the various ways in which a host can use Enkompass to reduce the costs of their operations, and increase the quality of their services.
In September 2009, Web hosting control panel software provider cPanel (www.cpanel.com) introduced “release candidate 0″ of its first Microsoft Windows Server 2008-based product, Enkompass. With its hosting automation tools traditionally based on Linux and FreeBSD, cPanel now offers customers with a wider choice of platforms with Microsoft IIS7.
Since its launch, Koston said, the company has made great progress. “The company is very dedicated to Enkompass… We have a very good size team working on it.”
Furthermore, he said that a great number of people are participating in test licences.
He noted, “Installing Enkompass is literally a 10-minute job,” and the benefits are great.
Particularly, Koston noted that “Enkompass was designed to keep the licencing costs down.” It supports MySQL for Windows, SQL Server 2008, 2008 web edition, SQL express and SQL server 2005, and businesses only pay for the licenses needed on each type of server.
Further, it reduces support costs with its easier management, and ability to add new resources.
The basic design involves Enkompass being installed on only one server, which typically only requires about 4 GB of RAM, and connected Web servers perform, which perform different roles. This structure, Koston said, makes administration and updates far simpler. “Encompass is installed once, not on all those web servers.” Also, by separating the services, there’s more reliability and higher performance. Koston noted, for instance, that “Microsoft SQL server uses resources heavily and really should have its own server.”
This also reduces software conflicts because the applications are less likely to, for instance, replace a DLL file. And it also allows for greater security and stability because if one server goes down, another can take on its role.
It can be easily used to run reports on bandwidth utilization, disk space, utilization, active accounts, and resource availability instantly to help make better business decisions. “Enkompass includes a separate service to moinitor hosting services on all servers in the domain. And will email you when problems occur with your servers.”
Perhaps most importantly, however, the individual parts come together to enable cPanel to form the basis for premium Windows-based hosting plans, which can command premium prices, which is good news for Web hosts.
