Costcohosting.com Name Sparks Dispute

September 1, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — WebHostingWholesale.com (webhostingwholesale.com) confirmed late last week that legal representatives for the Costo Wholesale Group has been pushing the company to give up its ownership of the domain name costcohosting.com. WebHostingWholesale sells Web hosting services for $1 per month through the costcohosting.com domain.

Costco originally contacted WebHostingWholesale in March by email, demanding it terminate usage of the disputed domain. Costco claims it owns the rights to anything using the world Costco.

Acording to WebHostingWholesale, Costco has continued to push its case since the March email. WebHostingWholesale claims its ownership of the domain costcohosting.com is not the same as “Costco.” The company says it has legitimate and legal rights to ownership of the domain and further adds that Costco was not even involved in the Web hosting and Internet services industries when it began making its claims.

At the moment, WebHostingWholesale does not have any plans to sell the domain.
