(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Midwest data center and colocation provider CoSentry (www.cosentry.com) is using Packet Power’s (www.packet-power.com) data center power consumption monitoring solution to gather detailed information on its infrastructure down to the device level.
According to Packet Power’s announcement earlier this month, CoSentry has upgraded approximately a third of its clients’ systems to include Packet Power’s smart power cable technology, which collects and wirelessly transmits power consumption information to Packet Power’s software for analysis that can be accessed online. Packet Power will be automatically installed for all new clients, and CoSentry plans to have its current facilities 100 percent upgraded by the end of the year.
“We chose Packet Power because of the low capital outlay and less intrusive installation – the implementation was as simple as connecting the Packet Power cables to the devices we wanted to monitor and that’s it,” CoSentry Sioux Falls facility site manager Brian Driscoll said in a statement. “We only needed a small maintenance window to connect existing clients to Packet Power.”
As the price of power becomes a major concern for data center operators and colocation providers, Packet Power offers a hardware and software solution that provides the information companies need to reduce their data center power consumption by monitoring the power flowing through the data center in detail and analyzing the resulting information. Packet Power can be installed within an hour without disruption to data center power and IT infrastructures.
CoSentry said its attention to reducing power consumption will help the Midwest data center and colocation provider become one of the most efficient facilities in the US.
“Before moving to Packet Power, we had to measure power consumption manually. Now there are no manual measurements and we have better visibility and accuracy at the circuit, client, and room level,” Driscoll said. “Packet Power makes it easier to access billing information and provides our clients with a portal to view their power consumption so they can monitor power as well.”
Packet Power chief executive officer Steve VanTassel said because data centers use so much power, they need to know exactly how they are using power to become more energy efficient. “Our power consumption monitoring and reporting services make it easy for customers to see what is driving power usage across time and where to focus their power savings efforts,” VanTassel said. “We give data centers a clear understanding of their power consumption so they can take steps to slow it down, extending the useful life of their infrastructure and reducing power costs.”
