(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Content delivery network Akamai Technologies announced on Tuesday it has appointed Kumud Kalia as chief information officer.

This marks the second major appointment for Akamai in less than a week, following last week’s appointment of Mark J. Vargo to senior vice president and general manager of EMEA.

In this role, Kalia will be responsible for leading the global strategy, development, and operation of the applications and infrastructure that support the company’s business processes.

Reporting to Akamai president and CEO Paul Sagan, Kalila’s focus will be on creating an agile and efficient user experience for Akamai’s customers, employees, and partners. He will be based in Akamai’s San Mateo, California office.

An engineer and experienced CIO, Kalia most recently ran the information services organization for energy and services business Direct Energy.

“As an innovative and strategic business leader, Kumud’s expertise includes managing high performing IT and operations teams for companies experiencing rapid growth and requiring significant scale across multiple business units,” said Sagan.

Akamai provides a secure platform over which businesses can engage users across the web, mobile, cloud, or a combination of public and private network environments. Last month, Akamai acquired rival CDN provider Cotendo for approximately $268 million.
