Frank Bunn, senior manager EMEA of communications service providers at Symantec
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The afternoon’s first keynote presentation after lunch came from none other than Frank Bunn, senior manager EMEA of communications service providers at Symantec (www.symantec.com).
Bunn started his presentation with an argument in semantics (pun definitely intended), suggesting that confidence is perhaps a better term for security when discussing the cloud seeing as it relates to giving peace of mind for end-users.
Key “cloud drivers” like agility, flexibility, cost, and portfolio rationalization are constantly challenged by “cloud inhibitors” like cultural norms, quality of service, security, and data privacy, says Bunn.
The key challenges for service providers are business generation to improve revenues, reducing churn,
He offered some statistics regarding the amount of threats found in a Symantec study performed in August 2010, which showed that there were 17 million pieces of malware, 1 billion Web requests and 3.9 billion emails scanned.
Using “the cube” as a framework, Bunn discussed the components or “faces” of providers building their own security business, including technical, financial, services, and sales.
Bunn highlighted the seven security threats according to the Cloud Security Alliance, which Symantec is a member of.
These threats comprise of the abuse and inappropriate use of cloud computing such as DDoS, spam and malware, insecure interfaces and APIs, malicious insiders, shared architecture, data loss or leakage, account and service hijacking, and unknown risk profile.
At the tail end of his presentation, Bunn highlighted the growing issue of hackers infecting apps stores with malicious code, making a brief sales pitch for Symantec’s code signing certificates.
