Hurricane Electric has enhanced its Border Gateway Protocol tool to debug Internet routes and peering relationships

Colocation and Internet backbone provider Hurricane Electric announced on Thursday that it has enhanced its Border Gateway Protocol Toolkit which helps with the analysis, debugging and reverse engineering of Internet routes and peering relationships.

This news comes two months after Hurricane Electric launched its portugeuse IPv6 certification through a partnership with the Brazilian Network Information Center.

The website features route graphs that show to whom Autonomous Systems are connected and how routes propagate, according to the press release. The relationships can be investigated to determine how routes are swapped and how transits are handling particular routes.

While the toolkit website was designed by Hurricane Electric to be used by peering coordinators and routing engineers, web hosts may also use this free resource, and since it is a colocation provider as well as a networking provider, web hosts are its customers. HE says the tools are particularly valuable to computer security engineers since the site identifies multi-origin routes, which are often the result of either configuration mistakes or deliberate attempts by hackers to hijack traffic.

According to the press release, the site also features information for engineers responsible for configuring Resource Public Key Infrastructure and Secure Inter-Domain Routing.

“This BGP toolkit is unique because leverages an intuitive interface to present information from multiple vantage points on the Internet,” Martin Levy, Hurricane Electric’s director of IPv6 Strategy said in a statement. “The site is based on in-house code that we have been using to debug problems for over two years, and we wanted to make it available to the public for free. It’s a very cool resource that gives an excellent user experience.”

Hurricane Electric operates its own global IPv4 and IPv6 network and is considered the largest IPv6 backbone in the world, and will be participating in the World IPv6 Launch on June 6.
