(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Houston-based colocation provider FIBERTOWN (www.fibertown.com) announced this week that it is breaking ground on a 50,000 square foot data center in North Houston, in collaboration with wholesale data center operator Digital Realty Trust (www.digitalrealtytrust.com).

The new facility is located at the intersection of 145 and Beltway 8 North, says FIBERTOWN, which has two existing data centers, in the Houston area and in central Texas, and has attracted Houston companies looking to secure IT systems and disaster recovery operations outside of hurricane zones.

“Demand for quality data center space in Houston is growing as more companies look to colocation to ensure high availability of resources and reduce IT costs,” says John Clanton, CEO of FIBERTOWN, quoted in the company’s press release. “The easily accessible location and proximity to fiber make North Houston the perfect location for our newest state-of-the-art facility.”

FIBERTOWN says it has partnered with Digital Realty Trust to develop the facility as one of that company’s modular Turn-Key Datacenter solutions.

In a conversation with the WHIR, Digital Realty director of sales Dan Ephraim says the deal is a big one for Digital because it illustrates the company’s potential as a partner – as opposed to just a landlord. He says the company’s expertise can provide opportunities a smaller colocation provider (like FIBERTOWN) would not otherwise be able to access.

“Companies that are single site or dual site,” he says, “they’re not great at going out, acquiring land and building a data center in 20 weeks.”

The facility will be constructed using Digital Realty’s “pod” architecture, which will deliver redundant dual power to each of three data center pods, which will serve as the stages in which the facility will be deployed.

Further features of the facility include multiple generators with back-up fuel, 2N redundant cooling infrastructure, a network operations center staffed 24 hours, inside and perimeter security controls, efficient hot and cold aisle design and modern smoke and fire protection.

The facility is located outside the FEMA 500-year flood plain, along the main Dallas-to-Houston fiber route, according to the company, and is accessible from all major Houston freeways.

FIBERTOWN says the facility will be ready to accept customers in early July.

Last year, FIBERTOWN launched a partner program, enabling partners to offer their customers access to its business continuity services.
