(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Hosting service provider management software developer CloudLinux (www.cloudlinux.com) and sofware developer Ksplice (www.ksplice.com) announced on Wednesday they have launched CloudLinux with Ksplice Uptrack which offers rebootless Linux distribution designed for hosting providers.

The move follows the recent launch of Ksplice Uptrack service for Fedora Linux, making it the latest Linux distribution to instantly install crucial updates and security patches without having to reboot.

The rebootless update service incorporates both CloudLinux and Ksplice Uptrack, allowing users to install CloudLinux kernel updates without the need to reboot their server.

Linux distributions require a reboot about once a month to stay up to date with important kernel security updates that require maintenance time from staff as well as cause downtime for customers.

Major Linux distributions ask their users to install a kernel update roughly once each month, which requires a reboot.

Until a system can be updated, it can be vulnerable to security flaws. By allowing users to install kernel updates without downtime, Uptrack reduces the cost of system administration and reinforces security, increasing the actual rate of compliance with security updates.

CloudLinux invented the Lightweight Virtual Environment, a kernel-level technology that limits the amount of resources available to a specific process or customer.

LVE isolates specific hardware resources in a lightweight environment and prevents a single tenant on a shared server from affecting others, particularly when the tenant experiences a sudden peak load.

CloudLinux CEO and founder Igor Seletskiy discussed LVE technology in a recent Q&A interview with The WHIR.

“We are extremely excited to be supported by Ksplice, since it is such a revolutionary and innovative service,” says Seletskiy. “Web hosting companies dread server reboots, and anything that helps them avoid downtime is a great improvement. Many of our customers already use Ksplice, and having full support for CloudLinux gives our customers the ability to benefit from this innovative solution.”

New customers can purchase CloudLinux with Ksplice Uptrack from the CloudLinux site, while existing CloudLinux customers can purchase Ksplice Uptrack from the Ksplice site.

The monthly subscription fee is $3.95 a system for the first 20 systems, and $2.95 for each system thereafter.

More than 200 IT companies have partnered with Ksplice to offer its Ksplice Uptrack service, including Media Temple, DreamHost, Host Gator, SingleHop, KnownHost and Future Hosting.
