(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In the first cloud trends track session of day one at HostingCon 2010, Mezeo Software’s (www.mezeo.com) Steve Lesem delivered his presentation, “Cloud Storage Adoption: Public, Private, Enterprise, and Service Providers”.
The presentation addressed the different ways companies can use cloud storage technology to meet the needs of their customers.
Lesem discussed how economics alone isn’t necessarily what will drive the technology of cloud storage.
He highlighted the reasons why the marketplace is adopting cloud storage, such as tagging and searching capabilities, file sharing and collaboration, and the fact that it has a service oriented architecture.
The focal point of Lesem’s presentation was the notion of a “cloud storage maturity model”, which is based on actual cloud storage adoption processes in the industry.
Lesem explained that the market is in currently level 2, where there is a separation of public and private clouds.
He said that the industry is expected to be in level 2 for quite a few years before moving onto level 3, where hybrid clouds will run see the interaction between public and private clouds.
Finally, in level 4, in which Lesem said will not take place for at least another four or five years from now, the federated cloud will takeover completely.
Enterprises are going to be looking for low-cost backup solutions, such as Iron Mountain’s online storage.
He stressed how important is to have an in-house storage cloud to eliminate bandwidth charges and keep costs down.
