Cloud Platform FlexiScale to Provide Basis for €9M FP7 Initiative

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The European Union (www.europa.eu) has chosen Flexiant’s (www.flexiant.com) cloud platform, FlexiScale, as the infrastructure foundation for a €9 million euro (about $11.9 million) Seventh Framework Programme (known as FP7) to enable the transition of mobile applications to the cloud.

Conducted under the EU’s FP7 for research and technological development, the “4CaaSt” project will create a standards-based Platform as a Service platform that is not specific to one cloud provider or one technology. Ensuring uniformity of standards and protocols across the industry, 4CaaSt will help contribute to an ecosystem where applications from different providers can be tailored to different users, mashed up and traded together.

According to Flexiant’s Friday announcement, the EU selected FlexiScale after a rigorous selection process by the EU to join an academic and industrial consortium of Europe’s leading experts including Telefonica, Nokia, Orange and Ericsson. FP7 bundles together all research-related EU initiatives and plays a crucial role in achieving the goals of growth, competitiveness and employment.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our relationship with the EU and to be working with some of the largest telecommunications companies in Europe on this important project,” Flexiant’s chief executive officer Alex Bligh said in a statement. “Having been the first business in Europe to launch a cloud platform it is exciting to now be part of the team that will help move their applications onto the cloud.”

Flexiant’s announcement of its participation in 4CaaSt closely follows the unveiling of its participation in another EU FP7 project known as Optimis. Through its participation in Optimis, Flexiant is responsible for the test bed of a €7 million technology project that spans nearly all of Europe, and promises to strengthen member organizations’ clouds through the sharing of resources.

Cloud computing lets businesses lease computing power as needed, rather than making users buy expensive equipment. This also provides organizations near-infinite scalability, and drives down operating and capital expenditure, as well as significantly reducing the carbon footprint of each transaction.

By facilitating the development of cloud services, 4CaaSt will help service providers transition onto the cloud, letting them quickly roll out a richer array of innovative applications, generate considerable cost savings, and substantially reduce their environmental impact.
