(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Open source cloud operating system OpenStack (www.openstack.com) announced on Thursday that it has released Diablo, the fourth version of its software. Diablo has nearly 70 new features and enhancements aimed at broadening the community of users, according to the press release.

According to OpenStack, Diablo allows users to automate and control pools of compute, storage and networking resources across multiple data centers.

Diablo delivers user-requested features required for enterprise private cloud implementations and adds new features in the areas of computing, image service and storage.

According to the press release, OpenStack Compute now includes a distributed scheduler to deploy virtual machines globally. It also includes a high-availability networking mode to prevent downtime if a primary server fails and adds support for a new authentication system, OpenStack Identity Management.

OpenStack Object Storage has new multi-cluster container sync to enable a user to choose on a container by container basis. This, according to OpenStack, allows data to replicate in order to a separate cluster located in multiple geographic locations.

OpenStack Image Service now includes new filtering and searching capabilities through the API, which OpenStack says was “a highly requested feature by service providers who support a large number of customers globally.”

In addition to the three core projects, Diablo includes a new user interface, OpenStack Dashboard, to manage OpenStack services, as well as a unified identity management system that makes the cloud work with existing authentication systems, according to the press release.

Led by Nebula, the Dashboard project is a self-service portal for administrators and users to access and provision cloud-based resources.

“The OpenStack Dashboard project provides a way to visualize OpenStack and many of its capabilities. The addition of an official web based user interface will help to drive wider adoption of OpenStack,” Devin Carlen, project technical lead for Dashboard, founder and VP of engineering at Nebula Inc, said in a statement. “We want to ensure that the OpenStack user interface architecture is flexible enough to support the requirements of service providers, businesses, and the rich ecosystem of emerging products and services that are compatible with OpenStack.”

OpenStack Identity, led by Rackspace, provides unified authentication systems across all OpenStack projects while integrating with internal authentication systems.

Rackspace recently launched its OpenStack training program. The WHIR spoke to Mark Collier, VP of business development and marketing, Rackspace Cloud Builders, about the program.

Finally, OpenStack Quantum provides an API to request and configure virtual networks and supports extensions to deliver advanced networking capabilities.
