(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Cloud hosting software developer Atomia announced on Tuesday it has released Atomia DNS under the Internet Systems Consortium open source license.
Atomia develops and sells a hosting automation platform to web hosting companies, which is based on a framework that allows customers to integrate with new software and hardware and develop their own custom features.
DNS management is a service that allows users to edit the zone file of their domain name in order to point their domain name to a static IP address, create canonical name records and mail exchanger records.
Atomia DNS was previously only offered to customers of Atomia Cloud Hosting Platform, but it is now being extended to all administrators with the open source release.
The DNS management software includes an API that easily integrates with any system, and eliminates the need for manual work by offering fully automated DNSSEC support out of the box.
“Atomia DNS gives you full control over your name servers; it also comes with DNSSEC support out of the box. With modest resources you will be able to sign and manage a significant number of zones – and it scales easily,” said Jimmy Bergman, chief architect at Atomia. “Atomia DNS was earlier exclusive to the clients of Atomia Cloud Hosting Platform and is proven to work in big production environments. It’s capabilities to handle DNSSEC were battle-tested in late December last year – with excellent results.”
Atomia DNS is released under the ISC license, which is easy to understand and void of unnecessary restrictions. Atomia executive vice president Daniel Jarpinger said in the press release that the project took on a “no strings attached” approach, meaning the software is intended for anyone to download and use so that they can easily contribute and build their own custom implementations.
Premium support is also available for those who need it via an existing support organization at Atomia, while the source code is available at GitHub. Out of the box Atomia includes support for billing, mass DNS hosting, Clusters shared hosting (Linux & Windows) and VPS/cloud hosting.
