Citi Says 200,000 Customers Credit Card Data Stolen in Hack

 Citigroup (www.citigroup.com) announced on Thursday that hackers gained access to 200,000 North American customers credit card numbers. 

According to a report by the New York Times, Citi says that the stolen information includes customers’ names, credit card numbers, addresses and email addresses. The bank says social security number, date of birth, card expiration date and card security code were not part of the breach.

Though this attack does not affect nearly as many people as the recent Sony outage, its the latest example of vulnerable security systems in giant corporations. The hack on Sony leaked the information of about 100 million customers.

Citi says it discovered the breach during routine monitoring and has since “enhanced procedures to prevent a recurrence of this type of event.”

Citi says it has contacted the customers impacted. The bank declined to share much detail “for the security of these customers.” 

According to the report, Anonymous claims it was not involved in the hack. Anonymous also denied its involvement with the attack on Sony, though the company suspects Anonymous was responsible.

Hacker group LulzSec has been tied to many of the recent high profile hacks lately including stealing personal information of FBI affiliate InfraGard.
