CipherCloud, a provider of cloud data protection, has bought SaaS security provider CloudUpNetworks, which is expected to add capabilities to the CipherCloud platform that provide compliance controls and greater visibility into data throughout the cloud.
CloudUpNetworks integration will add to the CipherCloud platform capabilities to scan and tag different classes of data according to privacy requirements. CloudUpNetworks technology also tracks classified data from cloud to cloud, and enforces data loss prevention on a per-user basis.
According to a recent survey from Internap, 40 percent of “cloud-wary” companies cited cloud security as a concern keeping them from moving to the cloud. And security-conscious and regulated industries like banking and healthcare may be looking for greater assurances when it comes to data stored in the cloud.
Since CipherCloud’s initial cloud protection offerings such as encryption, tokenization and data loss prevention, the company has been focused on removing the data privacy and compliance barriers to cloud adoption. And this has meant adding capabilities to add security controls and visibility into third party clouds that protect cloud-bound data.
“We continue to raise the bar for cloud information protection,” CipherCloud founder and CEO Pravin Kothari said in a statement. “The consumption of multiple cloud applications into the enterprise requires security to be in lock step with visibility. This acquisition reflects our strategy of growing our business with the tools our customers need to go to the cloud.”
The acquisition closed in early January, and no financial terms were disclosed.
