July 14, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Software Engineering Insitute?s (SEI) CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC) (cert.org) announced today the creation of the CERT ? Certified Computer Security Incident Handler Certification, a program designed to certify individuals in computer security incident handling. The certification is valid for three years.
“In today?s business world, most organizations depend upon networked computer systems to achieve success,” said Dr. Barbara Laswell, technical manager of practices, training and development within the Networked Systems Survivability program at the SEI. “As applications become more complex and services increasingly integrated, protecting network security and recovering from computer security incidents has become a business-critical component of an organization?s IT security plan.”
To attain certification, individuals take four core courses from the SEI, or an organization licensed to provide SEI courses, and one elective course. After successful completion of the coursework, the student is required to pass an SEI-administered evaluation.
The program?s curriculum covers the “full depth of the incident-handling function,” the company said. In addition to training related to first-line response, the program prepares participants to lead and manage an incident response team. Certified handlers are also trained to handle diverse aspects of both responding to an incident and team leadership.
