(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet backbone and colocation provider Hurricane Electric (www.he.net) announced on Wednesday that it has established connections to the Japan Network Access Point and the Japan Internet Exchange.
According to the press release, this expansion will significantly widen Hurricane Electric’s reach across Asia.
This move comes nearly three weeks after Hurricane Electric expanded its PoP at Equinix Paris Exchange.
Hurricane Electric says this connectivity to Japanese networks enables reduced latency and fault tolerance, load balancing and congestion management.
“Hurricane Electric’s connections to both JPNAP and JPIX expand our network footprint in the Asia Pacific region,” Mike Leber, president of Hurricane Electric said in a statement. “With the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) out of conventionally allocated IPv4 addresses, these connections will allow new and existing customers in Japan to receive the IPv6 functionality they are demanding.”
Recently there has been some concern that the energy shortage in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami in March could cause data center downtime this summer. The Japanese government said it would give prioritizing power and energy supply to data centers.
On Tuesday, Sony estimated that the effects of the earthquake in Japan will cost the company about $268.9 million.
