(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As users scramble to recover their data from Megaupload servers before it is deleted by federal authorities, Carpathia Hosting and Electronic Frontier Foundation have created a website to help lawful users retrieve legitimate files from Megaupload.

According to an announcement made on Tuesday, Carpathia created www.MegaRetrieval.com to help lawful users in the US work with EFF to explore options for retrieving their legitimate, non-infringing data from Megaupload.

Carpathia was one of the web hosts that leased servers to Megaupload, according to a report by PCMag. The government executed search warrants on servers owned by Carpathia, as well as servers owned by Cogent Communications.

According to the press release, Carpathia does not have, and has never had, access to the content on Megaupload’s servers but it wants to help Megaupload users by promoting EFF and its non-profit legal services.

“EFF is troubled that so many lawful users of Megaupload.com had their property taken from them without warning and that the government has taken no steps to help them,” Julie Samuels, staff attorney at EFF said in a statement. “We think it’s important that these users have their voices heard as this process moves forward.”

Megaupload’s owners are charged with engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, and conspiring to commit money laundering. The FBI seized 18 domains associated with Megaupload.com and approximately $50 million in assets.
