Can-Spam Flouted, MX Logix Says

June 11, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Just one in every six unsolicited pornographic emails comply with a new Federal Trade Commission law governing the labeling of pornographic spam, according to MX Logic (mxlogic.com), a provider of email protection and security solutions.

The law, which went into effect in May, requires the words “sexually-explicit” to be included in the subject line of all unsolicited email that contains adult content. The words warn recipients of the message’s content, making it easier for them to block such messages. According to MX Logic’s findings, only 15.3 percent of a survey of 12,000 pornographic spams included the mandatory label. The survey was undertaken in the first seven days after the new law went into effect on May 19, 2004.
