BSD, Mac OS X Most Secure Web Server OS

February 20, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The open source BSD family and Mac OS X based on Darwin are the most secure Web server operating systems, according to a monthly study conducted by mi2g Intelligence Unit (mi2g.net), a digital risk firm. The study also found that for the first time, Linux was the most frequently breached Web server operating system, while the number of successful attacks against Windows-based servers declined in January, continuing a trend that has transpired over the last 10 months.

According to the study, the system attacked most frequently was Linux at 80 percent, followed by Microsoft at 12 percent and BSD and Mac OS X at 3 percent. The firm also reported that in government environments for the month of January, Linux was breached 57 percent of the time and Windows 35 percent. For BSD and Mac OS X, no breaches were recorded. Last August, mi2g recorded results that lay in stark contrast with January’s results for government servers as 51 percent of the compromises occurred in Windows environments and only 14 percent in Linux.

The study analyzed 17,074 successful digital attacks against online servers and networks. The aggregate numbers for January 2004 had Linux accounting for 13,654 breaches, Windows for 2,005, followed by BSD and Mac OS X with 555 breaches.
