Bluestone and AdaptivCool Expand Data Center Utility Partnership

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Building on a similar agreement made in March, data center cooling solutions provider AdaptivCool (www.adaptivcool.com) has partnered with Massachusetts-based Bluestone Energy Services (www.bluestoneenergy.com) to provide data center energy-efficiency solutions in National Grid and NSTAR utility territories across the state.

According to AdaptivCool’s Tuesday announcement, Bluestone will be combining its skill in designing solutions that earn financial incentives from local utilities with AdaptivCool’s expertise in adaptive-cooling technologies such as Room Scale Intelligent Cooling.

“We are excited to take the next step with Bluestone Energy,” AdaptivCool general manager Rajesh Nair said in a statement. “Their engineering and project management expertise are proven and well-known in the region. Data center utility incentives are just getting off the ground in the Northeast, so we are delighted to have a partner that can expedite the process for our customers.”

AdaptivCool and Bluestone recently collaborated on a data center efficiency project for a biotechnology company in Cambridge, Mass. The project qualified for a significant incentive from NSTAR, saves 40% of the annual data center cooling energy and resulted in a simple payback of less than 2 years.

“AdaptivCool’s cost-effective technologies are an important part of an energy efficient data center,” said Bluestone Energy president Peter Fairbanks said in a statement. “Given high energy costs and attractive utility incentives, the return on investment of our solutions is compelling.”

Many states have introduced incentives to attract and keep data center projects, which add jobs and could inject millions of dollars into the economy. In October, California utility provider PG&E (www.pge.com) announced it would start offering financial incentives for California data centers that purchase servers accredited with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star rating.

Home to some of the most brilliant minds in technology, Massachusetts is at the forefront of energy efficiency. EMC, Cisco, MIT and the University of Massachusetts announced a $100-million partnership in June to build an environmentally-friendly, high performance, data center in Holyoke, MA. Email hosting provider Net Atlantic (www.netatlantic.com) also recently upgraded its 40,000 square foot Salem, MA data center designed to be the most energy efficient.

AdaptivCool has also been active recently on the other coast. In September, AdaptivCool launched a new West Coast office at the Santa Clara, California, campus of its parent company, DegreeC (www.degreec.com), to meet greater regional demand for its data center thermal and energy efficiency services and solutions.
