(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – With nearly 50 hours of downtime over the span of two months, blog hosting site Tumblr (www.tumblr.com) announced on Friday it has raised $30 million in additional funding to expand its data center infrastructure, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

The funding from Spark Capital (www.sparkcapital.com), Union Square Ventures (www.unionsquareventures.com), and Sequoia Capital (www.sequoiacap.com) will go towards expanding its infrastructure and hiring five new engineers.

“After the holidays, we’ll be opening our second data center to nearly triple capacity and prep for much faster growth next year,” Tumblr’s CEO and founder David Karp writes in a blog post. “Today, we already light up more than a rack of new servers every week.”

According to Data Center Knowledge, Tumblr has more than 500 million pageviews a month and hosts more than 11 million blogs.

In an analysis of uptime of major blog hosts by Pingdom (www.pingdom.com), it found that Tumblr had the most downtime of five major blog hosts – Tumblr, Posterous, Typepad, WordPress.com, and Blogger. Tumblr had an average of 47.5 hours downtime between Oct. 15 and Dec. 15, 2010. Posterous followed Tumblr with an average of 2.1 hours over that same period. Blogger experienced 100 percent uptime over the two months, and Typepad and WordPress.com had between 0.1 and 0.2 hours downtime.

In the survey, Pingdom found Tumblr had the longest outage by far, with some blogs being unavailable for almost 24 hours on December 5-6.

According to the report, the downtime on Dec. 5 was related to database cluster failure during maintenance.

“We feel for Tumblr, because it’s quite likely that they’ve had issues scaling the service in face of its growing popularity,” Pingdom writes. “This rapid growth is bound to be a factor in the downtime we’ve seen.”
