January 8, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Bell Canada and Nortel Networks today announced plans to conduct the first North
r

American trial of Nortel Networks Interactive Multimedia Server, a new Voice
r

over Internet Protocol product designed to deliver advanced multimedia
r

services. Beginning this month, Bell will trial the product with its largest
r

enterprise Centrex customers, enabling them to increase employee
r

collaboration and improve productivity.
r

r

Nortel Networks Interactive Multimedia Server is designed to deliver instant
r

video calling and other new telephone, Internet and video services using
r

“off-the-shelf” computer hardware. It can be deployed in existing
r

terrestrial or wireless networks, or in next generation packet voice
r

networks.
r

r

“People have grown accustomed to the convenience provided by services like
r

caller ID and voice mail delivered over traditional telephone networks,”
r

said Sue Spradley, president, Carrier Voice over IP, Nortel Networks. “Now
r

as we move to more cost-effective ‘packet’ networks, Nortel Networks
r

Interactive Multvimedia Server will deliver new, practical services that will
r

fundamentally improve the way we communicate.”
r

r

“Bell Canada is committed to providing converged IP solutions together with
r

industry leaders to deliver increased value to our customers and offer them
r

more communications options,” said Joan Highet, vice president Voice, Bell
r

Canada. “This trial is the next step in the evolution of our Business Access
r

services toward a suite of Hosted Business Telephony solutions. Through
r

Nortel Networks technology, we will be positioned to add or modify new
r

services and deliver them ubiquitously across our entire network.”
r

r

As part of its Centrex IP evolution, Bell Canada plans to trial several new
r

services with Interactive Multimedia Server, including:
r

r

Personal Call Management – users can specify how and when calls are
r

received on a wireless, business or home phone based on pre-specified
r

instructions. Preferences can be customized based on time of day, Caller ID
r

or other parameters.
r

r

Instant Video Calling – users can initiate a video or voice call
r

without having to pre-arrange conferencing facilities simply by putting on a
r

headset and clicking a button.
r

r

Hot Desking – employees can carry phone numbers and calling
r

preferences with them when they change desks or offices, whether for the day
r

or for permanent relocations.
r

r

Collaborative Messaging – regardless of location around the world,
r

workers can collaborate in real-time, sharing files and Web pages, or
r

engaging in interactive whiteboard sessions.
r

r

r

r

Nortel Networks Interactive Multimedia Server is available now with further
r

services and applications to be added in second quarter 2002. Interactive
r

Multimedia Server will also serve as an applications platform for Nortel
r

Networks next generation Wireless Networks solutions, supporting 3GPP Open
r

Services Architecture specifications and taking advantage of the latest IP
r

technology including Session Initiation Protocol.
