Bargainhost Suffers Second Widespread Attack

June 4, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Bargainhost (bargainhost.co.uk) has been subject to a widespread hacking attack for the second time in two months, according to reports published Tuesday in Internet Magazine.

The BBC reported that the attack affected approximately 3,000 customers and resulted in many having anti-war slogans splattered across their Web sites.

The last wave of attacks in late April left 1,500 customers embarrassed after similar attacks on their managed shared servers.

According to reports from the company, three servers were down for two hours while two other servers were also adversely affected.

“We realize how much this downtime has affected our customers as we feel your pain as well,” said Bargainhost IT manager James Innes in an announcement. “A polite message to our help desk with your problems will help speed up your response. Our staff have been under undue stress because of these problems.”

The company has advised customers to keep their own backups of site content in the event of future attacks.
