June 13, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Accoridng to a report in the Kansas City Business Journal, Bank of America (bankofamerica.com) recently announced plans to spend approximately $90 million dollars to expand its 13-year-old data center in Platte County, near the Kansas City International Airport.
Officials for the bank did not offer any details about the expansion, seeking to “protect the confidentiality of [its] assets.” The company says a filing with the Kansas City Plan Commission speaks for itself.
At a meeting next Tuesday, The Plan Commission will review the final plan approval request, which proposes the addition of 140 square feet on two levels. According to the proposal, the expansion would be completed by June 1, 2009.
The data center was originally constructed by Boatmen’s Bank, a predecessor to Bank of America, based in St. Louis.
The filing apparently estimates that the expansion will create four new jobs on top of the data center’s existing staff of 53. The bank employs 1,400 people locally, most of them in the 50 branches.
According to the Business Journal, the local climate and insulation from issues like terrorism threats, Kansas City has become a popular destination for data center projects.
Last year, the Carrier Hotel Alliance expanded its membership to include Kansas City, Kansas’ largest carrier-neutral facility 1102 GRAND.
