AWS Moves Infrastructure to Equinix Facility

January 19, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — AWS Convergence Technologies (aws.com) has chosen to move its IT infrastructure to an Equinix (equinix.com) Internet Business Exchange center in the Washington, DC area, the companies said on Monday.

Equinix said that by moving to its carrier-netural facilites, AWS, which owns and operates a network of weather stations, will be able to enhance the performance and reduce the operating costs of its IT infrastructure.

According to Equinix, the network service providers available at its IBX centers allow AWS to implement a more direct path to the ISPs, carriers and networks it uses for content distribution.

“Equinix is the only place where we can directly interconnect with our choice of every major global network and an aggregation of managed service providers, ensuring operational continuity for our electronic data infrastructure,” said Christopher D. Sloop, senior vice president and chief technology officer of AWS Convergence Technologies. “This is a critical concern to us, as our content distribution operations are the lifeblood of our business and require the highest levels of uptime.”

Equinix facilities include power backup, HVAC systems for environmental control, interlocking “mantrap” doors, multiple layers of biometric hand-geometry scanners controlling access, Kevlar-lined bullet resistant walls, as well as 24-hour security officers and hundreds of surveillance cameras.
