September 22, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Payment processor Authorize.Net (authorize.net), has been facing a series of distributed denial of service attacks, some of them leading to service outages, according to a report by Internet research and reporting firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).
Authorize.Net said the attacks have caused some outages for customers using its credit card processing services. Some customers were reportedly able to process transactions normally, but were not able to activate new accounts.
According to Netcraft, DDoS attacks targeting payment processing companies Authorize-IT and 2Checkout in April of this year were linked to extortion schemes. Attackers threatened the companies with downtime, demanding payment. Authorize.net did not offer any insight into the motives of its attackers.
