AT&T Enhances VPN Services With New Access, Connectivity Options

September 13, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — AT&T (att.com/ipservices) today announced additional access and connectivity options for its market-leading private and public IP Virtual Private Networks – including gigabit Ethernet – that give businesses unparalleled capabilities to get the most out of their IP-VPNs.

Unveiled at the NetWorld + Interop trade show here, the new access andconnectivity capabilities let enterprises remotely access AT&T’smarket-leading private VPN service from 2,200 dial points of presence inmore than 850 cities in 60 countries The company says they can also ncreasethe speed and flexibility of how they access their public VPNs via a rangeof Ethernet services up to 1Gigabit, and connect their back-officeapplications to their public websites with private IP-VPN access to AT&T’s18 Internet Data Centers worldwide.

In a related move, AT&T also announced class of service capabilities for itsprivate VPNs and for its managed Internet access services to help networkmanagers prioritize traffic on their networks and use available bandwidthmore efficiently.

AT&T Private IP Access Services lets enterprises extend access to theircorporate private VPNs from many countries around the world. Businesses cannow use AT&T’s global remote dial access service from 2,200 points ofpresence in more than 850 cities in 60 countries. Using Layer 2 TunnelingProtocol customers can use their current AT&T Frame Relay Serviceinfrastructure for remote access, eliminating the need for additional VPNaccess circuits, routers and modem pools.

Support for narrowband and broadband Internet Protocol Security encryptedtunnels is being developed and is expected to be available early next year.AT&T Private IP Access Services is in closed market trial today and isexpected to be generally available early next year. Ethernet servicesAT&T’s Ethernet access services provide high-speed, multi-megabit access toits enterprise customers.

These services complement AT&T’s existing portfolio of enterprise networkingaccess options with a metropolitan Ethernet service for connecting anenterprise’s locations within a given local area and a service that allowsenterprises to access the public Internet.

AT&T Metropolitan Ethernet Services will provide access services to ISPs,ASPs, Storage Area Network providers, and other companies that requiremetro-area Ethernet service between locations. This standards-based,metro-area Ethernet service will initially be provided at four speeds -50Mbps, 150Mbps, 300Mbps and 600 Mbps. This service will provide a range ofconnectivity options, including customer premises to customer premises,customer premises to an AT&T Local Network Services node, customer premisesto another access vendor, and customer premises to an interexchange carrier.The service is available in more than 100 metropolitan areas in 38 U.S.states.

AT&T Metropolitan Ethernet Services are complemented by AT&T UltravailableBroadband Network, a fully managed and monitored custom solution used byenterprises to interconnect client data/technology centers and businesssites in a metropolitan area network, for mirroring data and applications,and for transmitting large quantities of data. AT&T’s public InternetEthernet service is available in 10Mbps, 100Mbps, and 1Gigabit Ethernetspeeds and will be provided as an access option to the company’s existingManaged Internet Service.

The service initially will be available in New York and San Francisco,growing to nine cities by year’s end.

AT&T also uses its own infrastructure via AT&T Local Network Services as theprimary access to its MIS service. Both Ethernet Services are in controlledintroduction today and will be made generally available by the first quarterof 2002. Pricing for both services will be announced upon availability.
