As Heat Rises in France, Equinix Facility Suffers Cooling Outage

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As France continues to face a heat wave, a Paris-area Equinix (www.equinix.com) data center has suffered a Wednesday night cooling outage, leaving some customer services offline for hours, according to a Data Center Knowledge report.

Equinix used backup cooling units to cool the facility and regain control of the second floor of its Paris 2 IBX data center in St. Denis, France by Thursday morning, according to the report.

“Multiple chillers that support the second floor failed, and the standby chiller system did not start in time to absorb the load,” Equinix France general manager Michel Brignano explained in a report posted to the FrNOG Internet community forum (www.frnog.org). “This impacted temperatures on the second floor and had indirect effect on the ground floor as well.”

He explained that the specific cause of the failure is still under investigation, but it’s likely to be the result of component/subsystem failures in at least two of the three primary chiller systems supporting the second floor.

Paris 2 was also the site of another outage in early July.
