arsys.es Launches Cloud Hosting in Spain

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Unveiling the first product in its new line of hosting services, Internet services provider arsys.es (www.arsys.es) said makes it the first company in Spain to offer cloud hosting services, and, while the actual title is up to debate, arsys.es’ offering is undeniably a significant development in the Spanish market.

According to the company’s Thursday announcement, arsys.es’ Cloud Flexible Server, which offers scalability with nearly limitless resource constraints, also features the redundancy, and affordability associated with the cloud hosting popularized by companies such as Amazon Web Services (aws.amazon.com).

“We are excited to unveil this new line of services, thereby taking the lead in bringing cloud hosting services to the Spanish market,” arsys.es business division manager Fermín Palacios said in a statement. “The new cloud hosting services give customers complete control over their systems and costs through the scalability of the resources. Not only do they allow total control over a server, operating system or application, but also, can they be up and running in a matter of seconds after contracting them.”

While the definition of cloud hosting is subject to interpretation, and even the specifics of what constitutes Spanish cloud hosting is up to individual opinion. For instance, Spanish companies can resell hosting from foreign clouds, and new technologies make it easier for companies to create their own clouds.

arsys.es basically defines cloud computing to be the offering of server resources (such as bandwidth and storage) as a utility. “[A]pplications are no longer limited to a single physical piece of hardware, as with traditional hosting, but are run on a technological platform where servers are shared by many applications and run virtually everywhere.”

To meet the growing needs of customers, Arsys is planning to buy a new €15 million (roughly $19.6 million) data center this summer, giving it space for 15,000 servers.

The company will extend this new line of Cloud Hosting services with added functionality and advanced services. Over the coming months, arsys.es will roll out its cloud hosting to customers of its subsidiaries in France (www.arsys.fr) and Portugal (www.arsys.pt).

In December 2007 private equity firms The Carlyle Group (www.thecarlylegroup.com) and Mercapital (www.mercaptial.com) acquired Arsys for about $230 million.
