January 10, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As part of its campaign to entice non-Mac users to the OS X platform, computer systems developer Apple Computer announced this week that it has added UNIX users to the Microsoft Windows users it had been targeting with its “Switch” Campaign.
This week, the company released the public beta of X11 for Mac OS X 10.2. The common windowing environment and open source XFree86 project for UNIX operating systems lets X11-based applications run on the same desktop as Mac OS X applications. Apple says the final version of X11 for Mac OS X would be available later in 2003.
Apple says the application was downloaded about 25,000 times in 24 hours, as the company’s standards-based approach continues to catch on with the UNIX community.
X11 for Mac OS X comes with software, client libraries and optional developer toolkits that let developers build almost any X11 R6.6 application using a simple recompile. Apple says its version of X11 is completely integrated with the Aqua user interface for better interaction with Mac OS X applications.
