November 17, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — APNIC (apnic.net), the Asia Pacific
r
Network Information Centre, said today it would deploy two new Internet
r
root nameservers in the Asia Pacific region next month.
r
r
The servers, which are mirrors of the F-root, will be installed in Taipei
r
and Singapore. This brings the total of new root nameservers deployed by
r
APNIC in 2003 to five. Earlier in the year servers were installed in Hong
r
Kong, Seoul and Beijing. According to APNIC, installations are supported
r
entirely by APNIC, local hosts and partners.
r
r
Root nameservers provide core lookup services to the Internet’s Domain Name
r
System (DNS), which is accessed every time an Internet user visits a site
r
or sends a message. Although the proximity of a local server affects access
r
speed and efficiency, APNIC said there was only one root server in the Asia
r
Pacific region until this year.
r
r
The new servers are “mirrors” of the F-Root server, which are operated
r
directly by the Internet Software Consortium (ISC) in the United States.
r
APNIC said it has worked together with ISC on all F-Root servers installed
r
thus far under a cooperative agreement aimed Internet infrastructure in the
r
Asia Pacific region.
