Apache Tops Security Space Survey

August 16, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to the Security Space (securityspace.com) Web Server Survey, Apache holds the largest share of the Web server market by far, with 71.07 percent. Microsoft holds the second-place share with 22.30 percent. Netscape, far behind in third, holds only 0.86 percent.

The Security Space Web Server Survey is a survey of Web server software usage on the Internet broken down by 86 domains. According to Security Space, nearly 90 percent of all Web sites are “orphans,” to which no other sites link. The sample group of its survey counts only those servers referenced on other sites. Nearly 15 million Web sites responded to the July 2004 survey.

According to the survey, Microsoft IIS 5.0 was the most popular Web server operating system, running on 16.24 percent of the servers. Apache 1.3.27 was second at 14.8 percent and Apache 1.3.29 was third at 12.26 percent. Other Apache versions make up the bulk of the server’s 71 percent share.
