Apache Releases Web Server Update

December 2, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Apache Software Foundation (apache.org) and The Apache HTTP Server Project announced on Friday that it had released version 2.2.0 of the Apache Web Server.

The latest update features several improvements, including a simplified default configuration layout, re-factored bundled authentication and authorization modules, load balancing for mod_proxy and caching enhancements. A full overview is available at httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/new_features_2_2.html

Apache is encouraging all Apache users to upgrade to version 2.2.0

Modules written for Apache 2.0 will need to be recompiled in order to run with Apache 2.2. However, no substantial reworking should be necessary, Apache says.

According to Netcraft’s (netcraft.com) most recent survey, ApacheĀ holds a 70.98 share of the total Web server market.
