Market share for Netcraft's top servers from August 1995 to May 2009.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web analytics firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) announced on Tuesday it has released the results of its May 2009 survey, receiving responses from 235,890,526 sites.
Once again, Apache takes the top spot of the most popular web server, having gained 3.3 million sites.
Having held the top position since 1996, the web server had more than 106 million sites in Netcraft’s April 2009 Web Server Survey.
Microsoft-IIS follows in second place, having lost nearly 0.9 million, which is mostly attributed to a decline in account activity on Microsoft’s Live Spaces service.
Popular Chinese IM service QQ.com took third place with 29 million sites.
Google is in fourth place after gaining about 1.5 million sites this month.
Rounding out the top five is Russian nginx web server nginx, which gained 200,000 sites.
The web server has been consistently growing in popularity for the past few years.
China currently has the most nginx sites, with almost 2.5 million sites, followed by the US with almost 2.4 million sites.
