(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Web analytics firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) reported on Wednesday the results of its March Web server survey, where Apache gained the most hostnames for the third consecutive month.

The survey saw responses from 298,002,705 sites, an increase in more than 13 million hostnames from last month’s survey.

Apache saw an increase of 8.5 million hostnames, despite what Netcraft calls “large losses of 2.23 million at skyrock.net due to their servers no longer reporting a server banner.” Last month Apache gained 9.6 million hostnames.

Netcraft says most of the increase is once again due to AmeriNOC and Softlayer, with gains of 5.5 million and 1.2 million hostnames, respectively. In February, AmeriNOC and Softlayer were also the largest contributors of Apache hostnames.

nginx gained 1.2 million hostnames due to increases at a number of hosting companies including 289,000 at Hetzner Online AG.

Microsoft gained 560,000 hostnames, while Google gained 205,000. According to the survey, Microsoft’s gains were primarily from Go Daddy. Despite gains, Microsoft had a 0.7 percentage point loss in market share.

lighttpd was the only Web server vendor to see a loss in its number of hostnames, with a drop of 157,000 hostnames shared by multiple hosting companies.
