Apache Leads Netcraft February 2011 Survey

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web analytics firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) reported on Wednesday the results of its February 2011 survey, which saw responses from 284,842,077 sites.

Leading the survey with the largest number of increases in terms of market share and absolute growth is Apache, which saw 9.6 million new hostnames and a 1 percentage point increase in market share.

This is the second consecutive month Apache has gained the most hostnames. Last month, saw an increase of 10.1 million hostnames.

Apache has seen a gradual upswing since January 2010. This month, the most significant increase was found in the United States, where it saw an increase of 7 million new Apache hostnames.

AmeriNOC and SoftLayer were the largest contributors of Apache hostnames with 4.6 million and 1.3 million, respectively.

Apache saw a net gain of 817,000 hostnames in the Netherlands after it saw 1.3 million increase at Axoft Group.

Other developers that saw large gains this month were nginx and lighttpd, whose market share remained stagnant as a result of the increases that were found for the other major web server vendors.

Both Microsoft and Google saw a loss of hostnames and market share this month, with Microsoft seeing a 239,000 loss in hostnames in Germany alone.
