Apache Gains 6.7M Hostnames in Netcraft August Server Survey

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web analytics firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) recently reported that Web server Apache saw the greatest increase in the August 2010 Web Server Survey, with a gain of over 6.7 million hostnames.

The firm received responses from 213,458,815 sites this month.

Although four of these major Web servers gained hostnames, only two actually gained market share.

Apache’s increase in hostnames helped push its market share slightly over 56 percent this month, marking its largest share in three years.

This increase affected Microsoft’s share, causing the server to lose almost 1 percentage point of market share and bringing it down to just over 25 percent.

Despite this loss, Microsoft still manage to gain over 200,000 hostnames, with the majority of them being at China Telecom.

Things faired better for lighttpd, which gained 600,000 hostnames this month. After the server lost a massive number of hostnames at SAVVIS in Australia, lighttpd has partially recovered with a gain of 200,000 new hostnames.

Meanwhile, iWeb Technologies managed to gain 300,000 hostnames at lighttpd servers.

Google lost some of its market share this month, with a loss of 300,000 hostnames and a similar number of active sites.
