(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Web analytics firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) announced on Thursday that for the second month in a row, nginx saw the largest increase in market share amongst the top web servers. Apache gained the most hostnames, adding 10.1 million.

The results of Netcraft’s January 2011 Web server survey show that nginx has gained 0.88 percentage points or 3.59 million hostnames. nginx now controls 7.50 percent of hostnames in the survey.

In 2010, nginx had the steadiest growth of all the top server vendors, with only a slight loss in February.

Apache continues to dominate, having a 59.13 percent share and an increase of 10.1 million hostnames. The majority of growth was in the US and Germany.

The survey received responses from 273,301,445 sites, an increase of 39,452,952 sites from last month.

According to the report, Lighttpd was the only other Web server to increase its share of hostnames this month, adding 558,000 hostnames.

Microsoft added 669,000 hostnames despite losing 1.2 percentage points in market share.
