January 24, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to reports, America Online (aol.com) released last week an update of AOLserver, its open source Web server project.
AOLserver, a Web server designed for dynamic and large-scale Web sites, includes a dynamic page-scripting language and complete database integration. The latest release reportedly adds one API change and on-the-fly gzip encoding of HTTP responses.
Dossy Shiobara, AOLserver project leader, said in a media report that AOLserver does not aim to become a major Web server such as Apache, but intends to be more of a niche player. Shiobara argues that AOLserver should be considered by Web sites with extremely high levels of traffic – the five percent of sites that serve approximately ninety percent of the pages views on the Internet.
