September 9, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Angstrom Microsystems (angstrom.com), a technology company that endeavours to find “Green” computing solutions, has launched MaxPowerSmart, a new power efficiency solution that can save data centers up to 30 percent in energy costs.
According to Angstrom’s announcement Tuesday, every MaxPowerSmart server features a wide array of efficient power solutions and by bypassing inefficient power distribution units, they can achieve 94 percent efficiency by a process of converting grid power into usable 48-volt direct current.
Angstrom said competitors are often no more than 80 percent efficient when converting power from the US’s standard 3-phase 480V alternating current power to a usable form, causing unnecessary power loss and heat generation.
Angstrom uses a high-efficiency 480V AC 3-phase rectifier to convert it to 300VDC. Angstrom blade racks take the power signal before it is converted and converts it to EPS standard to drive its blade computers.
“For over 9 years, Angstrom has focused on quality engineering solutions for data centers to solve difficult power problems — both in terms of quantity and efficiency,” Angstrom chief executive officer Lalit Jain said in a statement. “Our MaxPowerSmart ultra-efficient power solutions take a major leap forward in providing a broad spectrum of data centers with a solution that suits their needs.”
Energy costs are an increasing concern for data center operators. According to the latest figures from the US Energy Information Administration (eia.doe.gov), the average price per kilowatt hour has risen from 6.57 cents in 1990 to 8.90 cents in 2006. Also, increases in server efficiency can have a nation-wide impact. Currently the data center industry uses 3 percent of all power consumption in the US.
