(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Credit card firm American Express (www.americanexpress.com) is planning on building a $400 million data center in Guilford County, North Carolina, which could create up to 150 jobs, according to a report by Greensboro News-Record.
Local economic development officials in North Carolina confirmed last week that the credit card company will build a data center in the area, which is set to open sometime in 2012.
“It is confirmed that American Express is coming here,” Pat Danahy, president and CEO of the Greensboro Partnership, told the Greensboro News-Record. “This is a big deal.”
American Express currently has data centers in Phoenix and Minneapolis, as well as a credit-card processing operation in Greensboro that has about 2,000 employees.
Last month, the Greensboro News-Record reported that Guilford had been competing with Des Moines, Iowa for the project. At the time, it was not disclosed that the data center build would be for American Express.
According to local economic officials, American Express plans to build two new buildings in eastern Guilford, with the combined space exceeding 500,000 square feet.
Economic officials for the city and county confirmed that American Express is building the data center without pursuing any tax incentives.
In a written statement, governor Bev Perdue said that American Express decided to build the data center in the city for the region’s quality and available work force and its business-friendly environment.
