AMD Names Intel Engineer to VP and CTO of Server Division

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Processor maker AMD (www.amd.com) announced on Monday it has named Donald Newell, a senior principal engineer at Intel Labs, as the company’s new VP and CTO of its server division.

Newell will report to Rick Bergman, senior VP and General Manager of AMD Products Group.

As the company’s CTO, Newell will help AMD prepare for its launch next year of the “Bulldozer” core and new Opteron processors.

Earlier this year the company released the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform.

“Don Newell brings a strong combination of leadership skills, engineering and design expertise, and strategic direction,” says Bergman. “We’re fortunate to have Don on board as we prepare for the delivery of the ‘Bulldozer’ core in our AMD Opteron processors, scheduled for launch in 2011.”

Additionally, Newell will oversee the company’s programs for server roadmap and platform design, including the concept and definition of AMD’s long-term server roadmap, leading teams worldwide, and working alongside with other AMD design and development teams.

Newell spent 16 years at Intel, where he most recently was responsible for leading the company’s Systems-on-Chip and data center networking architecture groups.

Over the course of his engineering career, Nowell has been responsible for more than 20 patents being filed.

Before joining Intel, Newell served in the role of software engineer at Datanex Software and Sequent Computers.
