Amazon CloudFront Now Supports Streaming Media Content

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Providing efficient, cost-effective media access , Amazon Web Services’ (aws.amazon.com) content delivery solution, CloudFront, now supports media streaming for files stored in Amazon S3, giving users content delivery network advantages for improving access to not only static content such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but also streaming content in a variety of Real Time Messaging Protocol formats.

According to an Amazon blog by company evangelist Jeff Barr, CloudFront is using version 3.5.2 of the Adobe Flash Media Server, and supports the RTMP, RTMPT, RTMPE, and RTMPTE varieties of RTMP. A CloudFront Streaming Distribution can be easily created using the AWS Management Console for CloudFront, the CloudFront APIs or a number of third-party management tools.

To stream media files using CloudFront, users can simply upload their media and player to an S3 bucket and set the appropriate permissions on each object, then create a CloudFront Streaming Distribution. They then embed the media player in a webpage, along with a link to the media file — the Longtail Setup Wizard can also be used to simplify and streamline this step of the process. Then all that’s left is publicizing the event.

CloudFront and Adobe’s FMS support of multiple bit rates and on-the-fly switching keeps content optimized for the speed of the end user’s connection.

“Migrating complexity to Amazon is always fun,” writes Barr. “We built and operated a scalable streaming cloud based on a combination of Amazon Services before. Using CloudFront Streaming everything works like before, but the complexity switched sides.”

Barr notes that streaming with Amazon CloudFront is easy to use, and its pay-for-use price scheme is at CloudFront’s usual rates, making an affordable solution for online broadcasting.

“There’s no excuse for progressive video downloads anymore, Amazon managed to adapt the simple workflow to the world of streaming video.”
