(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Domain registrar .CO Internet S.A.S. (www.cointernet.co) announced on Wednesday that Amazon (www.amazon.com) has signed an agreement to acquire the single letter domain names A.CO, K.CO and Z.CO and Cloud.CO. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Other companies have acquired .CO domains in the past, including Twitter, Overstock and GoDaddy. Overstock rebranded to be called O.CO.
According to a report by TechCrunch, K.CO could be used for Kindle and Z.CO for Zappos.
“Single character .CO domain names are increasingly considered to be strategic acquisitions by brands seeking a competitive edge in the escalating battle to attract, engage and retain customers online,” David Taylor, the lawyer that assisted Amazon on the acquisitions said in a statement. “While starting out as shortcuts to help Internet users access products and services more easily, over time such domain names will likely be leveraged in new and exciting ways.”
According to the statement, the .CO Registry will announce other “high profile” deals in the coming months.
“Amazon is famous for defining and redefining the platforms that have revolutionized the way that consumers shop online, and we’re thrilled that this visionary company will leverage the .CO domain as a new platform to enhance the shopping experience for its customers around the world,” Lori Anne Wardi, director of global communications for the .CO Registry stated.
TechCrunch says .CO is about to hit 1 million domains after only about a year of service.
