Al Gore Promotes Dot Eco Domain Name

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Dot Eco (www.dotecotld.com), the applicant for the new “.eco” top level domain, has entered into an integrated partnership with former US vice president and environmental activist Al Gore and his organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection, to secure and promote the “.eco” top level domain.

According to Dot Eco’s Thursday announcement, .eco will be a generic top level domain for individuals to express their support for environmental causes, for companies to promote their environmental initiatives, and for environmental organizations to maintain a web presence that more aptly reflects their core goals. Founded in 2008 by Fred Krueger and Clark Landry, Dot Eco created to secure, operate and promote the .eco top level domain in order to promote environmental initiatives and awareness. Also, a majority of the profits of the .eco initiative will be distributed to support environmental causes.

“We fully support Dot Eco LLC in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application process and look forward to working with Dot Eco LLC to promote .eco,” Gore said in a statement. “This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the Internet as a whole.”

Alliance for Climate Protection chief executive officer Cathy Zoi said Dot Eco’s unique fundraising approach not only helps fund nonprofit environmental organizations, but also helps promote awareness of climate change.

Dot Eco’s advisory board includes An Inconvenient Truth director Davis Guggenheim, renowned actor and UNICEF goodwill ambassador Roger Moore, and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change contributor and Physics for Future Presidents author Richard Muller.

Dot Eco will be applying for the .eco top level domain through the ICANN gTLD application process in late 2009.

There were only seven gTLDs (.com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and .org) throughout the ’80s, and it was not until 2001 and 2002 when an additional seven were introduced (.biz, .info, .name, .pro, .aero, .coop, and .museum). In 2003, ICANN initiated a new gTLD selection process that helped usher in six new TLDs (.asia, .cat, .jobs, .mobi, .tel and .travel).
