May 25, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), problems with Akamai’s (akamai.com) content distribution network caused a number of Web sites to go offline on Monday morning.
A survey of the Fortune 100 conducted by Netcraft showed that BellSouth, General Motors, Coca Cola and Verizon experienced performance issues. Netcraft said the problems also affected antivirus updates from Symantec, McAfee and TrendMicro, in addition to streaming video from Apple.
According to the report, Akamai said it was aware of the problem and was implementing a fix. Netcraft said the language in Akamai’s statement suggested a technical issue was at the root of the problem, rather than a distributed denial of service attack, as suspected by certain analysts.
