Afilias Offers Registrars Integrated Registry and DNS Solutions for New TLDs

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Domain name registry and DNS services provider Afilias (www.afilias.info) is now offering a full suite of registry and DNS services for new domain name registrars to ensure that both their proposed new top-level domain applications and registries are successful.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (www.icann.org) board of directors recently decided to allow organizations to apply for new gTLDs and act as wholesale registries in the upcoming TLD round this May. Published in the Final Applicant Guidebook posted on November 12, ICANN’s decision to permit domain name registrars to act as wholesale registries ends the separation that has existed between registries and registrars, creating new opportunities for both.

“Afilias launched the first new TLD registry ever when it introduced .INFO in 2001,” Afilias senior vice president and chief marketing officer Roland LaPlante said in a statement. “Afilias has supported TLD applications and has successfully launched more new TLDs than any other registry provider in the marketplace. We are pleased to offer registrars access to our world class services to power their own new TLD offerings.”

According to company data, Afilias-supported new TLDs are, on average, three times as successful in terms of total volume of registrations as non-Afilias supported TLDs. Afilias registry technology already powers more than 54 percent of all registrations in the 15 new TLDs launched since 2001.

“Afilias’ new TLD launch model is proven to be the best in the market,” LaPlante said. “Today we provide our TLDs with access to more than 360 registrars, representing more than 95 percent of the domain registrations. If a registrar wishes to operate as a registry in the new TLD round, they need a trusted and proven registry technology provider that allows them immediate access to the broadest distribution channel.”

Afilias’ Global Registry Services are available to registrars under a white-labeled service and include full thick EPP registry, WHOIS, a globally diverse and redundant Anycast DNS network, zone file publication, registrar accreditation services, 24/7 call-center and technical support, Web-based administrative tools, as well as sales and bid consultation services.

In addition, Afilias offers other premium solutions to augment its registry offering, including GoMobi mobilization services to make any website mobile ready, managed DNS services which can be extended to a registrars’ existing hosting business via a RESTful API, and a unique IDN-capable email solution that provides fully internationalized email functionality for Web-based or mobile email offerings.

Afilias has nearly 10 years of experience supporting gTLDs operating under ICANN contracts, and all Afilias services are DNSSEC and IPv6 ready.

Registry operator Neustar (www.neustar.biz) has also launched a service to provide registrars with all of the registry services they need to apply for and become a registry for their own gTLDs. These services include the back end registry, whois, global DNS, DNSSEC and all of the other capabilities required to meet the ICANN requirements for new gTLDs. The service will be offered as a white-label offering, meaning registrars can brand the solution as their own.

“Neustar has been operating a world class registry for 10 years and currently provides services to over 280 ICANN accredited registrars,” Neustar registry services vice president Tim Switzer said. “This white label solution will make it possible for registrars to quickly and cost-effectively enter the registry business, while promoting their own brands and domain extensions.”
